Wildcard vs Multi-Domain SSL: which coverage do you need?

Subdomains versus separate domains, with real examples, prices in PKR and the one mistake most buyers make.

Wildcard SSL

A wildcard certificate is issued for *.yourdomain.pk. It covers yourdomain.pk, www.yourdomain.pk, shop.yourdomain.pk, mail.yourdomain.pk, app.yourdomain.pk and any other first level subdomain you add later. One certificate, one renewal.

It does not cover second level subdomains such as dev.app.yourdomain.pk, and it does not cover a different domain such as yourdomain.com.

Multi-Domain SSL (SAN or UCC)

A multi-domain certificate lists several names as SANs (Subject Alternative Names). The names can be completely different domains: brand.pk, brand.com, brand-store.pk. Most products include 3 to 5 names and let you add more for a fee, up to 250.

Multi-Domain Wildcard

Some products let each SAN be a wildcard. So one certificate can cover *.brand.pk and *.brand.com. This is the choice for agencies and groups that run many sites.

The common mistake

Buying a single domain certificate for example.pk and then trying to use it on shop.example.pk. Browsers show a name mismatch error. Write down every hostname you use before ordering. If you are not sure, send the list to us on WhatsApp and we will tell you the cheapest certificate that covers all of them.
